MVP Advanced Toastmasters (Calgary)

The MVP Advanced Toastmasters is a club that challenges advanced Toastmasters, those who have obtained their CC or CTM.

One way we challenge them is by encouraging involvement in activities outside of regular meetings. These activities benefit not only Toastmasters but also the general public.

For example, last year we held sessions on Time Management, Etiquette, and Debate that were open to all. Toastmasters at the Calgary TLI benefit from our special presentations. This year’s is titled "It’s not Tomato Soup, It’s Truffle Soup"..provocative?? Our members are involved in sessions at the D42 Fall Conference and Spring Convention. Many of our members either coordinate or help with Youth Leadership programs.

Another way we challenge Toastmasters is by providing advanced evaluations not only to our members, but to guests, as well. During contest time, we invite contestants to practice their speech at our club. We then provide them with an evaluation specific to their contest. The speaker can choose how to be evaluated.....one on one, round table, or, specific parts of the judges form. We have had excellent feedback on how our evaluations have helped speakers in contests.

These are just two examples of how our club is special, as a resource to the community, as well as the Toastmasters community, and, by our excellent evaluations, available to guests as well as members.

The MVP Advanced Toastmasters Club meets twice a month, on the second and fourth Thursday, at Fluor Canada Ltd., 55 Sunpark Plaza, Calgary. For more information, contact President, Mark Kolke at: , or VP Education, Gerda Timm at:

Wit Pleasure

What can I tell you about Advanced Toastmasters Clubs that hasn’t already been scribbled on some Facebook wall?

I’m not going to start off with a dictionary definition of the word advanced or try to come up with an acronym containing words for each letter. Heck, I can’t even remember three-letter systems let alone an eight-letter one. I’m just going to sell you, I mean, TELL you that those of you who CAN join an advanced club – should. Especially, if you are serious about increasing your speaking and presentation skills exponentially; especially if you want feedback that is more than some Up With People– touchy-feely– group-hug–You’re OK I’m OK–Kumbaya whitewash evaluation. Especially, if you are looking at one of the best ways of getting out of the house at least one more time each month not in a half-hearted escape but in a triumphant return – better, stronger, faster, funnier, WISER.

I speak in favour of Calgary’s newest Advanced Toastmasters club “Wit Pleasure” - a club dedicated to the development of humour in speech and presentation skills. A club that exists because there is a demand for making a better connection with your audience so that they are better to receive your message whether it be a 5-7 minute humourous speech in a 18 member club; a 15 minute technical presentation for a class of fellow geeks or a 45 minute keynote presentation in front of several hundred teachers on a Friday afternoon at the start of a long weekend. Connection with the audience is critical and humour is one of the most sought-after techniques in establishing that rapport so crucial to communication. DON’T start off with a Joke. Start off with a Connection.

The main criteria for joining the advanced club are that you have already accomplished your Competent Communicators designation and belong to another club. But, there’s nothing to say you can’t ‘visit’ the club to give you incentive to finish off those last few speeches. Just the mere fact that you have the opportunity to speak more often and receive more evaluations automatically increases your efficiency in your writing and presenting skills. What’s the worst that can happen? You actually advance your career in your present field? You are asked to speak at more functions (with a meal)? You have people paying to hear you speak?

Wit Pleasure offers a few more opportunities that you won’t find in most other clubs. Yes, we do speak from official Toastmaster Advanced Manuals but have added additional “exercises” that will flex and build that communication muscle. Some of the roles you will experience at a WP meeting include: an Opening Monologue; Caption writing; a Roast; StandUp Routines and Improvisational Games. Also, at every meeting, there is a segment of specific Tips, Tools and Techniques presented that you can start to use immediately in your next speech or presentation.

Please note, we are not here to make stand-up comics of all our members or create the next TheatreSports® all-star to appear on Who’s Line Is It Anyway? Although, it could happen. Also, this club is NOT only for veteran actors or entertainers with years of experience on the stage. On the contrary. It is for ANYONE who is serious about being humourous. Think of it as cross-training. Isn’t Table Topics improvising? Come on. What have you got to lose except some inhibitions?
