NEWS
on Club Coaching

D42 Welcomes newly appointed Club Coaches. District 42 has been committed to finding Club Coaches. This commitment results in the appointment of Club Coaches as they are needed, and District 42 is delighted to welcome each of them to the Club Coaching Team. -Posted1/28/05

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
on Club Coaching

How many Club Coaches can be appointed to any one club?

Either 1 or 2 coaches. Many Toastmasters find club coaching as a 2 person team to be the most effective way to coach a club. This is especially true in situations where time commitment is a big concern, or in situations where long distance driving is required. It is generally safer to share driving duties made possible by a two coach system.

What qualifications do I need in order to qualify for appointment (become a Club Coach)?

There are no qualifications in the context of the Toastmaster Communication or Leadership Track. For example a Toastmaster does not need to be a designated CTM or a CL or have any other designation to qualify. A Toastmaster must simply have a desire to coach and the time to do it. That being said, the Club Coaching Program provides a wonderful opportunity for maximum involvement within a Toastmaster District.

As a Club Coach, how much time do I need to devote to coaching each month?

Surprisingly Club Coaching is not a time devouring exercise. Realistically a Club Coach should make himself/herself available for coaching several times a month. Further, Club Coaching is generally performed in a time flexible fashion making it a suitable activity for today's fast paced lifestyles. For example, a Club Coach and the Club Facilitator (member of the coached club who works specifically with the Club Coach, i.e. Club President) may choose to meet briefly during a lunch hour one time and the following time they may choose to work together on some things by way of an evening phone session.

Can I be appointed as Club Coach for my own Club?

This is a "black and white" question and the answer is no. A Club Coach must come from outside of the Club at the time of appointment. The reason why this is the case is because a Club Coach needs to be "neutral" to enable the club to make a fresh start. It should be noted that upon appointment the Club Coach may join the club they are coaching if they desire (this is however optional).

Christine Dombroski,
Club Coach 2003 - present
CMA Toastmasters Club

"The Club Coach position benefited me in several ways. I learned to be an observer and a better listener. I am a take action type of person so I had to take more of a back seat approach. I learned to be patient and let the membership work at their own speed to move the club into the future"

Brad Korbo,
former Club Specialist
(on comparing the Club Coaching Program with the old Club Specialist Program)

Tony Rocha,
member, CMA Toastmasters Club

"I would encourage struggling clubs not to give up but rather to seek out a coach just like CMA did. We are not yet 20 members but we plan to be at charter strength and a Distinguished Club by June 30, 2005"
